Sometimes it’s the little things that can make your home feel drab. So here are 5 ideas for simple home refreshes without the inconvenience and mess of a big renovation.
Refresh idea #1 – New lights
It’s amazing how different your home can feel with:
Take a look at our Facebook page for some inspiration on what’s possible.
Refresh idea #2 – Replace yellowing powerpoints and light switches
Over time, white plastic light switches and powerpoints turn a grubby shade of yellow or grey. It doesn’t matter how much you try to clean them, the discolouring is an age thing and can’t be reversed.
There are all sorts of cool and stylish power point and light switch options as well as high tech light switches that can be operated from your smart phone. One of our favourite suppliers is Clipsal and you can find their powerpoint and switch range here.
So make your home look clean and fresh by asking us to replace your old discoloured powerpoints and light switches.
Refresh idea #3 – Embrace simple strip lighting
Strip lighting is a fine ribbon of LED lights that pack a punch. You’re most likely to find them:
So if you have a dark corner or work area that’s badly lit, chat to us about installing some strip lighting.
Refresh idea #4 – Improve your bathroom lighting
Whether it’s shaving or applying make-up, every bathroom needs good lighting but very few bathrooms have it. So if you are struggling to see your face clearly in the mirror, ask us to help you find the solution.
Refresh idea #5 – Install powerpoints where you need them
Have you lost powerpoints behind couches, cabinets and other furniture? Or perhaps your home was built with insufficient powerpoints for your needs. Let’s make 2022 the year you throw away your powerboards and extension cords! After all, they can be dangerous and a possible fire hazard. Ask us to replace them with extra powerpoints located where you need them.
Want a home refresh?

Hey! Matt and Pat here.
This summer, there’s a lot to be excited about. We’re emerging from a massive lockdown and the inability to catch up with family and friends. In some areas of Sydney, last year’s Christmas celebrations were also restricted.
But don’t let the excitement of making this Christmas super special put you in danger. Follow our Christmas and garden lighting tips to keep you, your family and friends safe this summer.
Your health and safety are always important to us so we carefully follow all COVID safety requirements. For your peace of mind, we also offer contactless quoting. Read on to learn how it works.
For all your home, office and ‘working from home’ wiring needs, call us on 0418 442 578 or email info@kuring.com.au.
Cheers,
Matt Cox & Pat Dobbs
The weather is warming up and the countdown to Christmas has begun. So here are our top 7 lighting tips to make this summer bright, safe and full of Christmas cheer.
1. Always buy Australian compliant lighting
If you are planning DIY festoon lighting for your patio or buying new Christmas lights, make sure they have the Australian Standards Compliance Symbol or an approval number e.g. N12345. You will usually find this information on the power cord near the plug.
To ensure they are compliant, always purchase your lights from a reputable retailer. You may pay a bit more but it means your lights should be safer for your family.
2. Lighting your alfresco areas
It’s wonderful to entertain outdoors on balmy evenings so if you have an alfresco area, take a look around at night. Is it as well-lit as you would like? Can you see what you are doing at the barbeque or around your sitting/dining area? If the answer is no, get in touch with us and we will plan and install ambient and task lighting to make the most of your alfresco entertainment area.
3. Cool your patio
Sometimes heat can be trapped under your patio area so if you have a ceiling, we can install a ceiling fan to ensure summer entertaining always includes a cooling breeze. If mosquitos are a problem in your garden, operating your ceiling fans can help reduce numbers.
If you are keen to install a ceiling fan in your enclosed patio or deck, check the height first. There must be at least a 2.4m clearance between the ground and the blades.
4. Always do a safety check before arranging Christmas lights on your tree
Before arranging the lights on your Christmas tree, check them first. Look for things like:
It’s also important to check your Christmas lights are working before you place them on the tree. If your tree comes with integrated lighting, check it works before you add the decorations and ensure your tree illuminates uniformly.
5. Using a living Christmas tree?
If you are transforming a living tree into a Christmas tree this year or even using a fresh Christmas tree, ensure you turn off the power and unplug your Christmas lights BEFORE watering.
6. Decorating your home with external Christmas lights
It might sound obvious, but always check the Christmas lights you use outside are designed for outdoors. If it is stormy or raining, don’t turn them on. It’s not worth the risk to your home and your family.
We always recommend using low voltage LED lights outside and especially when decorating your home with Christmas lights. NEVER go to bed with your Christmas lights on – even your outdoor ones. It’s just not worth the risk.
7. Outdoor powerpoints
Instead of running extension cords throughout your home and garden, ask us to install outdoor powerpoints for your alfresco areas and additional indoor powerpoints wherever you need them. In most cases, it’s very cost effective and removes the risk of tripping over extension cords.
Two final safety tips …
If you have a busy life remember, we can quote on-the-spot and do the work in the one visit.
For help with any of your electrical requirements, call us on 0418 442 578 or email info@kuring.com.au. The lead-up to Christmas is a busy time for us so don’t delay if you would like some electrical work done around your home before Christmas.
Hey! Matt and Pat here.
October means the start of daylight savings and with fingers crossed, the end of Sydney’s severe lockdowns. As we move our clocks forward by one hour, it’s a good time to check our smoke detectors. In this newsletter, we’ll talk about a fabulous, new technology for smoke detectors which will wirelessly alert everyone in your home.
Your health and safety are always important to us so we carefully follow all COVID safety requirements. For your peace of mind, we also offer contactless quoting. Read on to learn how it works.

Our sense of smell goes to sleep when we do. So if a fire begins in our homes while we are sleeping, we probably won’t smell it. That’s a big problem because fire depletes the oxygen present in our homes and our furnishings can create toxic gases that will make us feel drowsy, disoriented and short of breath.
That’s why smoke detectors are so important. They let us know if there is smoke in our homes so we hopefully have a few minutes to get the family out of the house.
Ideally, all smoke detectors in your home should be interconnected so when something starts to smoulder, every smoke detector in your home goes off. This will give you the maximum amount of time to get out.
Until recently, interconnected smoke detectors required hardwiring which can be difficult to retrofit in some homes and apartment buildings. But now there is new technology that’s more affordable than ever and it allows smoke detectors to be wirelessly linked throughout your home.
Wireless interconnected photoelectric smoke detector … Big name. Big benefits!
As the name suggests, wireless interconnected smoke detectors don’t require hard wiring. Instead, they use a radio frequency to trigger every smoke detector in the system. This technology allows a smoke detector in one area of your home to trigger the other smoke detectors. In apartment buildings or multi-storey homes, it means the smoke detectors will be triggered on each floor.
Hardwired or wireless, having a photoelectric smoke detector is important because it detects smoke when something begins to smoulder. Having this early fire detection ability means you have the maximum amount of time to alert your family and get out of your home.
The other great benefit of photoelectric smoke detectors is their battery life. Unlike the old style smoke detectors, you don’t need to change the battery each year. Instead, the battery lasts 10 years and then you replace the entire smoke detector.
Don’t have regrets!
There are minimum requirements for the number of smoke detectors you need to have in your home and they vary from state to state. But one thing is for certain, if something happens in your home which starts a fire, you’ll want to know you did everything possible to keep you and your family safe.
If you don’t know how old your smoke detectors are, get us in to change them. If you have any doubts about whether you have sufficient smoke detectors in your home, ask us to review them.
Don’t wait until you have the fright of your life and a smouldering appliance in your home. Ask us to review or replace your smoke detectors today. To make a time, call Ku-ring-gai Electrical Service on 0418 442 578 or email info@kuring.com.au.

We all know that since the arrival of COVID-19, we’re relying more and more on online shopping and home deliveries. In fact Australia Post reported a 36% increase in deliveries in the first 20 days of the Sydney lockdown. Supermarkets are also experiencing record demand for home delivery services and have substantially expanded their delivery times.
For residential strata schemes, this additional delivery traffic means common area lighting needs to be up-to-scratch to avoid trips and falls by delivery personnel and residents.
Sensor lighting on paths, walkways and garages are an awesome way to provide great safety lighting with the potential of reducing your strata’s power bills. They can be used for:
We recommend installing LED sensor lights because they are longer wearing than traditional fluorescent lights and they don’t need maintenance or regular globe changes.
LED lights are also kinder to the environment because they are highly energy efficient and don’t use mercury like florescent globes do.
The sensors can be programmed to turn on in sections so there is always plenty of light ahead of you.
If you are a strata manager or live in a strata and would like to investigate your lighting options, please get in touch with us. Our strata work doesn’t require face-to-face contact with residents and we follow all COVID safe practices. For your security, all team members are police checked and we are fully insured.
With most staff working from home at the moment, things at your physical workplace are probably a little dark and quiet. But this could be the ideal time to shine more light around workstations, foyers, meeting rooms and reception areas.
Or perhaps it’s time to add some additional powerpoints in your workplace kitchen and breakout areas. Remember double adaptors and powerboards are not designed to accommodate the power loads generated by appliances like kettles, toasters, microwaves and sandwich presses.
If there is more than one appliance in use, it quickly becomes a fire hazard and could harm your staff when they return to the workplace.
While no-one’s around, ask us to come out to improve your workplace lighting and install some additional powerpoints. We offer remote quoting or we can provide an on-the-spot quote before we begin the work.
For all your home, strata and workplace wiring needs, call us on 0418 442 578 or email info@kuring.com.au.

We are still able to help you with urgent repairs and emergencies. This essentially means we can assist you with electrical work that relates to your health and safety, TV or internet connections and your telecommunications. While we are in your home, there are certain protocols we need to follow because of the Delta strain of COVID-19. We’ll explain more when you book your appointment.
Even if we can only provide limited services at the moment, you can still plan those upgrades and renovations.
Read on to learn how we are able to provide quotes for the work we can’t do at the moment. By getting a quote now, you can be placed on our “To Do Priority” list so we can do the work for you when restrictions begin to lift.
We even have some lighting tips to provide inspiration and don’t forget to visit our Facebook page where you can see examples of work we have done for other customers. Maybe there’s something there you might like to pop on your wish list for later in the year.

Have you ever tried shaving or putting on make-up when the lighting is poor? Or do you struggle with shadows on your desk or kitchen bench because the lights are in the wrong place?
Placing your lights in the right location for the task at hand will simplify your life! No exaggeration. So here are our 3 top tips for getting the lighting right around your home.
Tip 1: Bathrooms
Relying on a light above your head is bad news for personal grooming. For the best bathroom lighting, place lights above or beside the mirror. These days, you can get some spectacular mirrors with built-in lights. They look amazing and we can install them for you.
Tip 2: Desks for work and study
If the light comes from behind you, your head or hands will create shadows on your desk. This will make it hard to work productively. It will also cause glare on your computer screen making it difficult to read. Instead, use a desk lamp that can diffuse the light or be positioned to shine exactly where you need the brightest light.
Don’t have enough powerpoints for a lamp? Ask us to contactless quote on installing new powerpoints (and data cables) for your home office or study areas.
Tip 3: Kitchens and laundries
If you have overhead cupboards, LED strip lights are great because they can be mounted beneath the cabinets so they shine light directly onto the workspace. They are usually quick and easy to retrofit and can be used above hotplates, wet areas and benches.
Is poor lighting bothering you?
If you are stuck at home getting annoyed about your task lighting, get in touch to arrange a contactless quote. Once you let us know if you are happy to proceed, we’ll add you to our “To Do Priority” list so we can get to work at your place once the restrictions ease.
Simply call us on 0418 442 578 or email info@kuring.com.au.
